It was a sincere pleasure and an honor to be surrounded by, hold in my hands, and pass on these mini works of art infused with creative goodness, hopefulness, and positive energy created by a third of the Pocket Changers participating. Gratitude!

Exchanging!

Surrounded by creative goodness

It’s exciting that the next step of receiving starts to unfold in this process, as exchanged ATCs go out from not only here in Ohio, but another third in Georgia with Beth and in California with Hannah.  Thank you to everyone who contributed! I’m also curious and super eager to learn more about Pocket Change reflections and stories.  They will be shared through an eZine publication along with the ATCs received for the project so we can share and spread the good vibes and inspiration with everyone!  Yes!!

Find Inspiring Creative Territories

July 22, 2012
“Be brave enough to live life creatively.”  ~Alan Alda

find inspiring creative territories

I’ve been having a lot of fun experimenting with my alcohol inks on Inkssentials’ glossy coated artist trading cards as pocket goodies to stash inside a new file folder gluebook I’m gearing up to start about the inspiring ideas, community, and adventures of 6 Degrees of Creativity 2.

It’s only been a few weeks since this new round of workshops, instructors, and creative energy started, but so much fun already!

The paper stash swap for my workshop Creative Goodness with Gluebooks is quickly approaching and I can’t wait to incorporate what I receive in this exchange into my new gluebook theme. I also hope to share some of the gluebooks and themes that community members are creating and working on in future blog posts, so stay tuned for more gluebooking inspiration soon!

Experience Matters: Inspiration from the 2012 TLC Childhood Trauma Practitioner’s Assembly

July 16, 2012

Experience Matters Gluebook Spread

I just spent the last week in Clinton Township, Michigan attending the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children’s 2012 Childhood Trauma Practitioner’s Assembly, Experience Matters.

The above image is a spread from one of my file folder bluebooks I am currently working on to visually document some of my travels and adventures in twentytwelve. This spread includes printed material and paper stuff I collected throughout the week at the conference, some items from the sessions I attended, the hotel I stayed at, a little distressed ink, Staz On ink, as well as using my  Smash Stamp and Smash Stick.  It was lots of fun to collect stuff, play with laying it out, and glue it all together!

I also created the image below as a creative way to take notes on a session I was attending about implementing a trauma group for adults.  The pre-cut figure shape fits really nicely in one of the file folder gluebook pockets!

In the workshop I presented, Finding a Safe Place: Creating Safety for Survivors of Domestic Violence through Art, attendees spent some of the session making a portable safe place in the form of an artist trading card with various collage materials. This special ATC serves as a symbolic safe place or image that can travel, become mobile, or easily be carried as a visual reminder and grounding tool for well being, comfort, and emotional safety. This ATC can also be displayed on a mini-easel, bulletin board, ones workspace, a nightstand, or become part of a journal (or for stashing in a file folder gluebook pocket!).

If you are interested to learning more about the topic I presented on, you can view the SlideShare here:

I’ve also pinned some content inspired by this year’s Assembly and workshops I attended on my Pinterest board about Trauma if you are interested in checking out any additional resources!

I am looking forward to returning back to Michigan next month to present for VCE’s Trauma Learning Series about the benefits of art therapy with traumatized and grieving children & adolescents…

ATC Delivery in Route: Creative Goodness x 6

February 6, 2012

This week-end I exchanged all the artist trading cards (ATCs) I received throughout the last few months for the 6 Degrees of Creativity swap and mailed them all to their new homes in different parts of the globe. Since the moment my ATC workshop started in October for 6 Degrees I have been patiently waiting for this creative moment!  It is such a joy to see all the ATCs that have been sent and then to further connect participants through exchanging and mailing them all back.  We are now truly connected with the mini artworks we will receive ( x 6 ), along with the messages, creativity, and good intentions sent with each of them.  So wonderful and so much fun!

Lots of thanks and appreciation to everyone who was able to contribute and participate in this ATC exchange. It was an honor to host this swap for the 6 Degrees of Creativity community and connect to participants through this experience.

Here are some photos I took before, during, and after the exchanging:

Pre-Exchange ATCs that have been coming in since October 2011:

A sea of creative goodness is ready to be exchanged!

On the way to the post office! It took 45 minutes for the postal clerk to make sure all the postage and delivery methods (first class vs. parcel, international vs. domestic, etc.) were all good…ATCs were mailed out to the US, Australia, New Zealand, UK, and Canada. Many custom forms were filled out!   :)

In celebration of this exchange and everyone who contributed I put together a short video featuring one ATC received from each participant:

I also created a collective image of one ATC from each batch:

Open Heart Creating, Connecting & Community

January 20, 2012

In a couple of weeks, the 6 Degrees of Creativity Artist Trading Card (ATC) exchange will be underway and I’ve just finished creating a batch of ATCs to include as an extra ATC for each participant.  As the facilitator of this ATC workshop and organizer of the exchange, I wanted to make an ATC for each individual participating in the swap:

When creating my ATCs I reflected on the 6 Degrees of Creativity community as a whole, from each of the wonderful workshops being offered and instructors, the inspiring photos of art, comments, discussions, and overall community, connection, and spirit of creativity.

I chose a series of words to describe this experience and included six dots on each ATC to represent the concept of 6 Degrees and how we are all connected through our creativity, as well as having the opportunity to spread this energy and inspiration among ourselves and to others in our personal and professional lives. The words highlighted on each of my ATC cards express my collective response I’ve witnessed.

I recently re-read the post Creating with an Open Heart, Creating a Movement on one of my favorite creativity blogs, A Big Creative Yes which reminded me about my intention behind bringing together 6 Degrees of Creativity.  Dan Goodwin writes about the experience, importance, and sharing of creating with “an open heart” and how this practice inspires others to also create:

“By your example of creating, they then muster enough courage to try it for themselves. Then maybe this same thing happens with a couple of other people over a few months, and they too come out in public with their journals, their camera, their sketchbooks, because of your example. Maybe then each of these people you’ve directly inspired are then seen by three others, and they are encouraged to create more.  In a short space of time, your act of creating with an open heart has lead to nine others doing the same. A month or two later, each of them are seen, and inspire three others, meaning now 27 people are openly creating, all as a direct result of your initial courage to do so… By creating with an open heart, you’ve created a movement.”

It’s been a pleasure to actively engage with so many excited about creating, sharing, and experiencing this joy within this creative community. Creating with an open heart happens at 6 Degrees of Creativity everyday and that is awesome.  Lots and lots of creative goodness spreading everywhere… to our friends, colleagues, family, clients and more….And very soon, the sending out  of our ATC mail art exchange will create a little more- I can’t wait!

I look forward to sharing how the ATC exchange went in a couple of weeks so stay connected for more!

What are your 6 Degrees of Creative Goodness?

August 21, 2011

Video filming is almost finished for my Artist Trading Card (ATC) workshop & exchange that I am offering as part of the 6 Degrees of Creativity experience opening this fall. My workshop will include a series of videos introducing the ATC concept, material considerations, examples, and exploring the theme of 6 Degrees of Creative Goodness.  This theme will empower participants to reflect on and create 6 ATCs about the role of creativity as a meaningful practice in our life, work, and relationships, including the opportunity to share and receive more creative goodness in the workshop’s ATC exchange.

Between now and early October, I am looking forward to finalizing the 6 Degrees of Creativity site and opening these virtual doors on October 10.  Over the past few weeks I have been humbled and inspired by the kind notes of interest, support, and encouragement around launching this new community and experience.  Thank you!  I am also honored to be working alongside an awesome group of colleagues:  Kristina Bell DiTullo, Lani Gerity, Cathy Malchiodi, Jenny Navarro, and Kat Thorsen who will be teaching an amazing line up of workshops focusing on concepts and art-making about transformation, social change, and more creative goodness!
