Everyday Courage: Artist Challenge Coins

March 27, 2014

This week’s 14 Secrets Challenge from Lani Gerity inspired the theme of my Artist Challenge Coins (ACC) for an upcoming 6 Degrees of Creativity workshop swap.

Lani’s challenge encouraged readers to create a medal for others and I thought Courage ACCs would be great to make for this prompt:

Courage Artist Challenge Coins | creativity in motion

Courage ACCs

On my wooden circle shapes above I used a combination of watercolor, glitter glue, dictionary words, ink, and metallic paint pens.

I also came across these epoxy clear domes at the craft store a couple of week-ends ago and they fit perfectly on top of the round 1 inch surface.  Each dome is also adhesive, so it was super easy to attach.  I can’t wait to exchange these five ACCs with members from the Creative Mail Art Collabs and Challenges workshop this spring!

While focusing on this theme for my ACCs, I also kept thinking about a favorite children’s book I enjoy reading in art therapy when also exploring this theme: Courage by Bernard Waber.

Waber reminds us:

There are many kinds of courage.

Awesome kinds.

And everyday kinds.

Still, courage is courage whatever kind.

Back in 2011 when I took Lani’s 6 Easy Lessons for a Happy Artist’s Life workshop during the first round of 6 Degrees of Creativity, I remember using Waber’s reminder on the below art journaling spread.  It was part of Lani’s second lesson: Showing gratitude to our strengths!

Nice to re-visit this theme again and create more courage related creative goodness!  Many thanks Lani for the inspiration this week… :)

Spring Forward Art Making

March 8, 2013

There’s been lots of art-making happenings right about now with the anticipation & energy of spring starting to grow!  It’s almost time to “spring forward” with the beginning of Daylight Saving Time this week-end and to begin breaking out of winter hibernation.

Creative Pay It Forward: March

Earlier this week, I sent off March’s Creative Pay It Forward goodies to Erin, a paper stash of colorful and printed papers for her to play and create with! I also recently joined in on a Spring It Forward Mail Art Exchange organized by Art Therapist Christine Scott Hudson, focusing on the theme of spring to “flower power” our mailboxes this month.  A dozen participants signed up for us to make art for and in return, we’ll receive art back.

Spring Forward in progress

I decided to use a collection of old library book cards I received in a paper stash last fall (thank you Amy!) for the foundation of mixed media art I created with distress ink, stain, and magazine photo collage (including some from Lani’s Creative It Forward uppercase magazine art seeds I received last month- TY!).

Spring Forward

Creating these cards for this exchange was very fun- I experimented with using my bottles of distressed ink as a media for stenciling the circles around the cards.  I also used my SMASH stamp to currently date each piece, just like the various cancelled inked dates already stamped on the card.  I hope each one arrives safely to their new home in California, Texas, Ohio, Illinois, and Colorado.

Spring Forward Mailing Art Exchange

There’s a couple of more artsy projects in the works for the rest of this month as winter continues to slowly thaw out.  I also have one more opening left for anyone who would like to participate in the 2013 Creative Pay It Forward fun we’ve been having!  Check out the link to claim your spot! Spring It Forward with some creative goodness!

Surrounded by Creative Goodness

It was a sincere pleasure and an honor to be surrounded by, hold in my hands, and pass on these mini works of art infused with creative goodness, hopefulness, and positive energy created by a third of the Pocket Changers participating. Gratitude!

Exchanging!

Surrounded by creative goodness

It’s exciting that the next step of receiving starts to unfold in this process, as exchanged ATCs go out from not only here in Ohio, but another third in Georgia with Beth and in California with Hannah.  Thank you to everyone who contributed! I’m also curious and super eager to learn more about Pocket Change reflections and stories.  They will be shared through an eZine publication along with the ATCs received for the project so we can share and spread the good vibes and inspiration with everyone!  Yes!!

Pocket Change Power & The Art of Kindness

January 30, 2013

Pocket Change Artist Trading Card Swap

Today’s the mailing deadline for Pocket Change!  Below are my artist trading card contributions for this swap, inspired by the important intention Kindness is a Choice.  I used some of my assorted ATC stock, as well as a couple of playing cards for the cards’ foundations…then collage bits & pieces, words from an old dictionary, some distressed ink and stain, and a gold paint pen for edging:

Pocket Change Creative Goodness

Kindness is a Choice

As a summary from my previous post about this project, this ATC swap aims to create good vibes in the spirit of transformation & giving through making small pieces of art for one another, as well as an invitation to keep spreading acts of creative kindness to others in our lives and community.

Just think about the awesome power & positive Pocket Change energy coming in from around the world and its potential impact…Here are some thoughts by Wayne Dyer:

Research has shown that a simple act of kindness directed toward another improves the functioning of the immune system and stimulates the production of serotonin in both the recipient of the kindness and the person extending the kindness. Even more amazing is that persons observing the act of kindness have similar beneficial results. Imagine this! Kindness extended, received, or observed beneficially impacts the physical health and feelings of everyone involved!

Wonderful results!

Now that Pocket Changers have collectively made & extended their acts of kindness in the form of hundreds of ATCs, stayed tuned for more on the receiving and observing benefits as Hannah, Beth, and I begin to exchange and post the affirming mini works of art and stories sent in for this project… Lots of creative goodness to be shared and to be continued soon…  :)

Pocket Size Creative Goodness: Creating Change through Small Creative Acts

December 30, 2012

I’m super excited to be collaborating with Hannah Klaus Hunter and Beth Rommel on a new art adventure that’s being announced today and hosted by 6 Degrees of Creativity called Pocket Change.

Pocket Change: Artist Trading Card Exchange

A 6 Degrees of Creativity Artist Trading Card Exchange

Pocket Change’s intention is to focus on the concept of creating change through making something small (in the form of artist trading cards) to exchange with one another, as well as to encourage simple acts of creative kindness with others.

During our project brainstorming, I remembered fondly my artmaking for Operation Random Acts of Creative Kindness during Lani Gerity‘s 6 Easy Lessons for a Happy’s Artist’s Life 6 Degrees eWorkshop where she encouraged practicing acts of kindness for others and the health benefits behind altruism.  It was so much fun to create a series of artist trading cards to release out into the universe with good vibes and wishes for others.  P.S.- You can learn more about the benefits of participating in online art exchanges in this great article [free PDF download available!] written by Lani, Gioia Chilton, Maria LaVorgna-Smith, and Huyen MacMichael.

Another example is the community kind over matter, which was also created on the same foundation and has grown with awesomeness from the idea of kind acts of love and intention.  I recently shared KoM’s free printables and ideas on this blog as a great resource for the #26acts movement in response to the Sandy Hook tragedy.

Pocket Change is inspired by the same spirit and intention:

Pocket Change is all about how simple and small acts can create and instill kindness, gratitude, and change.  Think about the power of your mini artworks as a means to express and share a positive image, message, or intention with others (and the world!) that can make a difference, bring hope, or inspiration.

Please join us for some pocket size creative goodness and kindness to share with one another and others!  The deadline to sign up for the ATC exchange is January 15.  Learn more about the exchange details and how to get involved on the 6 Degrees of Creativity blog.

Creative Goodness Gratitude

December 23, 2012

In just about two weeks, the second round of workshops for the online art-making community 6 Degrees of Creativity will be coming to a close after our six months together.   This time full of creative goodness has really flown by!

Here’s some “Top 10 6 Degrees of Creativity Goodness I Love” (in no particular order!) created from one of my SMASH Pads.

6 Degrees of Creativity Top Ten

My 6 Degrees of Creativity 2 Top Ten

Thank you to everyone who participated in this offering, especially to the Instructors of 6 Degrees of Creativity 2: Hannah, Kelly, Sara, Fiona, and Magdalena who brought so much inspiration, encouragement, and connection with each of their workshops.  Lotsa fun in the positive spirit of community, collaboration, and creativity!

6 Degrees of Creativity 2 Gratitude Cards

Gratitude Cards

Throughout my e-workshop in 6 Degrees of Creativity 2, I’ve worked on a variety of gluebooks including my twentytwelve on the go adventure file folder gluebook documenting my 2012 fun, a brown paper bag gluebook, and just finished another file folder gluebook dedicated to 6 Degrees of Creativity. It includes paper,  notes, & mementos from community members or creative goodness inspired by the community.

6 Degrees of Creativity Gluebook

6 Degrees of Creativity 2 Gluebooking

Reflecting back on Creative Goodness for Gluebooks and member posts or images, it’s been such an artful journey about the different ways and ideas art journaling in the form of a gluebook can be used: on the go, in celebration of a special moment, or to focus on a meaningful theme or personal topic.

It has also been neat to see something as simple and ordinary as a file folder or paper bag be transformed into bookmaking art.  Equally fun was to learn more ideas about what to use to glue and create for the outside cover, the inside pages, or what to stash in gluebook pockets.

Paper Stash Swap

Paper Stash Swap

One of my favorite parts of the 6 Degrees of Creativity 2 gluebook e-workshop was the paper stash swap and gluebook page exchange many community members participated in this past August and November.  With much gratitude, I’m still using the fun and artsy paper goodies from the swap in my gluebooking! The swap & exchange was also a wonderful way to further connect to others from the workshop when making our art.

Gluebook Page Exchange

Gluebook Page Exchange

With 2013 approaching quickly, I’ve started to get a new SMASH Book (the Doodle Red one!) all ready to use for new year art journaling.  One of the first things I glued on some SMASH tabs and dividers I’ve collected, were these playful paper elves from Lani Gerity. Very nice! Now I have some happy tabs!  Thank you!

A Collection of Creative Goodness: Gluebook Page Exchange Fun

November 10, 2012

This afternoon I finished exchanging all the pages that came in for the 6 Degrees of Creativity 2 Gluebook Page Exchange.  What a wonderful collection of creative goodness!  Thank you to Jolie, Susanna, Lizzie, Cathy, Bailey, Suzanne, Julie, Lynette, and Nancy for contributing to this project!

Each participant created a series of 5 x 7 pages on cardstock and used a varietyof gluebook material to fill each page: magazine photo images, scrapbooking paper, old book pages, sheet music, as well as inspiration received in our Paper Stash Swap held a couple of months ago.  What a great use of these creative goodies that we received!

Stack o’ Gluebook Pages

Swapped pages were made into books that participants will receive back in their mailbox soon.  I used metal o-rings to assemble the pages together and created covers for each book as my page contribution.   My gluebook pages included a variety of collage paper stuff from in my creative workspace and  paper stash fun from our swap.  It was really neat to re-purpose these treasures and share them again in this form with the group.

This exchange was a great reason to make art together!  It was also a fun opportunity to create something meaningful and full of good vibes for group members, as well as receive this same act and positive messages in return.
