Hot Chocolate Adventures in Cleveland

March 8, 2015

Hot Chocolate Adventures in Cleveland | creativity in motionBack in November, my friend Lori and I decided to take on this Hot Chocolates to Try in Cleveland Top 10 List published by Scene Magazine.

Over the last 5 months we’ve paused our days to meet up almost every other week to take on one of the destinations featured (with the exception of Angel Falls Coffee Company in Akron, which we chose another Cleveland stop instead). Not only do I loooove drinking hot chocolate to keep warm in the winter, I’ve really enjoyed this adventure as a catalyst to slowing down, enjoying good company  & conversation, as well as a great reason for me to get out and about more during these cold, exhausting months to visit some familiar places and get to know some new ones.  Every stop was worth the trip!

This week-end Lori and I finally enjoyed our 10th stop, bringing this hot chocolate tasting tour to a close. Below are my reflections, rankings, and take-aways from each stop we made throughout our chocolate journey:

Hot Chocolate Adventures in Cleveland | creativity in motion

Root Cafe, Lakewood

The Root Cafe in Lakewood was an early December stop on this adventure.  I’m pretty sure I have had the Root’s hot chocolate before when meeting there for special projects and work stuff, but this time I was taking in the experience through our hot chocolate challenge taste buds.  I would suggest trying the Mexican Cocoa (Lori’s choice!) with cinnamon, cayenne, and vanilla for a kick in your cup!

Hot Chocolate Adventures in Cleveland | creativity in motion

Blackbird Baking Company, Lakewood

Mid December was our trip to Blackbird Baking Company, (also in Lakewood)!  Blackbird’s hot chocolate had a dark chocolate taste to it, which I think prepared me up for future stops on our agenda!

Fear’s Confections, Lakewood

Another Lakewood destination, Fear’s Confections kicked off our tour in November right before Thanksgiving.  I loved  the gourmet homemade cinnamon marshmallow that came in my hot chocolate!  Yum!

Hot Chocolate Adventures in Cleveland | creativity in motion

Civilization, Tremont

In mid January, Lori and I took on a Hot Chocolate Double Header and did two tastings in one day! Sugar high! One of those stops was at Civilization in Tremont, where I enjoyed this mug of chocolate goodness….Definite bonus points on the ranking system for whipped cream!

Hot Chocolate Adventures in Cleveland | creativity in motion

Dewey’s, Shaker Heights

The finale of our adventure took place at Dewey’s in Shaker Square, which was a super comfy and inviting place to enjoy our creamy hot chocolate next to their fireplace!  This cocoa was cinnamon good!

Hot Chocolate Adventures in Cleveland| creativity in motion

Bonbon, Ohio City

In January, we also visited Bonbon Pastry & Cafe in Ohio City who served up a really good cup of milky hot chocolate with friendly service… I also left a couple of my Creative Deeds there for finding on my way out!  🙂

Hot Chocolate Adventures in Cleveland | creativity in motion

Chocolate Bar, Downtown Cleveland

Towards the end of our tour, we visited Downtown Cleveland’s Chocolate Bar, which was a.maz.ing.  With a hot chocolate menu of over 10 flavors, it was hard to choose just one.  We went with our server’s recommendation of the “Extra Dark” for the absolute chocolate experience and it did not disappoint, topped with thick whipped cream, chocolate stick, and shavings.

And here’s my Top 3:

Hot Chocolate Adventures in Cleveland | creativity in motion

Sweet Moses, Gordon Square Arts District

Sweet Moses Soda Fountain and Treat Shop in Cleveland’s Gordon Square Arts District was our first stop after the New Year started, and the first and only tasty hot chocolate on the tour that came with whipped cream and a marshmallow square!  Yes!  I reeeaaallly enjoyed their vintage hot chocolate recipe and their overall drink presentation was classic!

Hot Chocolate Adventures in Cleveland | creativity in motion

Phoenix Coffee, Ohio City

Our stop to Phoenix Coffee in Ohio City was a super snowy day in early February, which was perfect timing for hot chocolate drinking and worth braving the snowbanked street parking— this heaping cup tasted awesome! Phoenix also receives an honorable mention for the best looking hot chocolate on this list!  And…. this came with a separate cup of real whipped cream for my perfect hot chocolate drinking experience….Win, win!

Hot Chocolate Adventures in Cleveland | creativity in motion

Lilly Handmade Chocolates, Tremont

We added Lilly Handmade Chocolates as a random substitute and part of our Tremont Hot Chocolate Double Header in January and boy, I am glad we did!   Wow— their Signature Drinking Chocolate, an European Style blend of milk, dark, and white chocolate with cream and Aztec spices was sooooo creamy good and rich.  It tasted like old fashioned chocolate pudding, hot off the stove in liquid form.  Even without whipped cream I adored it and savored each drop-! Love!

This challenge was so much fun! Thanks to all the places we visited throughout this winter and to Scene Magazine for the inspiration– a great way to support and get to know more local businesses in Cleveland area neighborhoods in the spirit of hot chocolate drinking!  And support some emotional resilience related to the winter around us….

Now that our hot chocolate adventure has ended, Lori and I are seeking a tasting tour for the spring/summertime that we can embark on next.  I’ll keep you posted…. 🙂

3x5 365 | creativity in motion

3×5 day 365 is here!  Yay! To help celebrate the completion of this year’s creative daily practice, I put together a short video with all the index card art I created over the last 12 months:

I feel a deep amount of gratitude and appreciation to everyone who has helped support my 3×5 creating efforts…. Thank you!  This has been in the form of generous encouragement, interest, & feedback via social media, this blog, and 6 Degrees of Creativity Paper Stash Swappers who helped provide some of the collage material I’ve used.  And a big thank you to Tammy of Daisy Yellow, who has been such a huge inspiration in all things index card art related!  One of the highlights of this year’s project was finally being able to participate in Daisy Yellow’s ICAD this summer.

This has been a fun, creative adventure!  As I review the video and each of the days, weeks, and months from this project, it’s awesome to see the year come together and end in this way.

Looking forward to new creative adventures in 2015!

The end of year calls for an annual revo’lution reflection!  ‘Tis the season!

The 6 intentions I choose for 2014 were grace, tranquility, mercy, blithe, soul, and openness… and with the help of the revo’lution altered book I created at the beginning of this year and inspirations from my revo’lution making Pinterest board, here’s a lil’ twentyfourteen lookback:

Hot Chocolate Savoring & Creative Pausing

November 30, 2014

As fall gives way to winter and the year begins to finish out its final month, I find myself wanting to slow down while I adjust to colder weather, holiday anticipation, thinking ahead to planning for 2015, and reflecting on the adventures of 2014.

Here are a few things from this past week helping me take time out for some pausing….

I’ve embarked on a hot chocolate challenge 🙂 :

Hot Chocolate Savoring & Creative Pausing | creativity in motion

Fear’s Confections Hot Chocolate

My friend Lori and I have decided to enjoy this list of Top 10 Hot Chocolates in Cleveland by attempting to try each one throughout the winter.  It’s a great reason to get together, warm up from the cold, and savor some chocolate. Win, win, win! Our first stop on this hot chocolate tour was Fear’s Confections. I recommend splurging for the gourmet homemade cinnamon marshmallow to accompany the drink- Yum!

I also started prepping the children’s board book I’ve chosen for creating a new revo’lution altered book, one of the creative rituals I enjoy taking time to reflect on as the New Year approaches…  2015 will be year/book #7 in the series…. Yay!  If you’re in the NE Ohio area, I’ll be hosting a cozy Ready for Revo’lution art-making gathering (with hot chocolate available!) on January 7 that you can check out here.

Beginning a new revo’lution

Things are also winding down with this year’s 365 project, as my 3×5 art journey moves forward into its last month.  Incredible that 11 months and have already gone by, with only one more to go…. It’s an ongoing reminder time and time again to slow down in each creative moment.

February Warm Up With Winter Fatigue Art

February 9, 2014

This month continues to be an active winter of lingering subzero coldness and a big dose of snowfall here this past week.

Despite feeling a little (or a lot on some days!) of winter fatigue, making my own art  (and a cup of hot chocolate or two) has been a great way for me to warm up the frozen day to day landscape surrounding me,  as well as inspire wishful thinking about warmer days ahead (40 degrees would be nice!).

So here’s some of my winter weather fatigue art:

I’ve been working on my visual planning for February using pages from this 2014 Planner and some special extras I received this week in the mail from Theresa (thank you)….

I’ve also been material shopping & prepping for the Artist Challenge Coin workshop I’ll be co-facilitating this week at Cuyahoga Community College. It’s been fun to bring together some of my favorite mixed media materials for making these special tokens….

I’ve also had Inchie Art on the brain this past week- starting the process to create more 1×1 inch love, as well as finishing the Inchie book that I started last week for an upcoming 6 Degrees of Creativity workshop featuring this teeny tiny creative goodness…

And finally, an inspiring artful happening to this week was art journaling along with Artsyville’s Aimee Myers Dolich‘s during 21 SECRETS LIVE!. We played with watercolors, old ink pads, and collage.  It was so much fun to virtually see Aimee in her creative space LIVE! and hear/see/learn more about the techniques she uses for art journaling, gluebooking, doodling, and more.

I’m super looking forward to my 21 SECRETS LIVE! experience happening at the end of this month with host Hali Karla and doing some art journaling with everyone. It’s getting close….So exciting!

What art happenings and activity have you been (or will be!) up to this month?

Here’s to warmer days ahead that continue to be art filled and full of creative goodness!

In the Presence of Now: Creating One 3×5 At a Time

January 11, 2014

[Things end because…. something else is ready to begin.]

The last 10 days of my 3×5 365 project has been an interesting transition from 2013’s 365 project. A mixture of loss (from the familiarity of what was) mixed in with much excitement (about what can be), along with a reminder (to just be present in the here and now).  A helpful, simple tool I’ve started to use for this gentle reminder into the “presence of now” is this handy (and free!) Gratitude and One Minute Meditation app.  For me, this added practice helps re-frame and create a moment of pause before beginning to work on the day’s 3×5.

As I’ve started to embark on this new 365 adventure, these beginning days have been spent getting to know and being present to this project’s new form, being, and structure…a building of rapport and flow connected to this project’s voice.

I’ve already noticed how much I really do enjoy having the 3×5 space to [breathe], create, and play in.

I am eager to see what develops in these sacred spaces over time.. remembering to embrace this process one 3×5 at a time.

Openness

Revo’lution making for the past 6 years has taught me how important intentions are for new beginnings, change, growth, challenge, and transformation.

ready for revo'lution [2014] | creativity in motion

I want to share another annual revo’lution making tradition that always inspires me–this year Lani created a Create Happiness Revo’lution and transformed her board book pages into a downloadable PDF that you can find here. I am also excited to read that AJ who was an active participant in my 2011 21 SECRETS revo’lution workshop continues to engage in this creative practice and will be working on her revo’lution book throughout this year. Having just finished my 365 revo’lution and taking time throughout the year to focus on this intention manifesting process, I love that AJ will be spreading out her 2014 revo’lution love this way!

If you’re interested in creating your own revo’lution, check out my ready to revo’lution e-book or consider joining in on this year’s 6 Degrees of Creativity where I’ll be offering an art journaling workshop dedicated to revo’lution making (includes the e-book!) as one of 6 online workshops dedicated to concepts of connecting, collaboration, art-making, and creativity into an engaged community of artists exploring transformation and using art for good. Registration goes on sale in a couple of weeks (stay tuned!) and will be open until July 31.

2014 Creative Planning

January 6, 2014

As I start to transition back into the work week after a restful holiday break, I thought it was great timing to play with my new 2014 Planner I just purchased and received from Teresa Robinson (aka @stargardner) last week via rightbrainplanner.com.  Right brain planning combines art journaling and creative planning into one practice and Teresa’s 2014 Planner includes templates, ideas, monthly prompts, and tons of inspiration to get started!

Imagination is the beginning of creation.  You imagine what you desire.  You will what you imagine and at last you create what you will. ~George Bernard Shaw

2014 Creative Planning | creativity in motion

Teresa’s 2014 Planner and all its elements can be used in so many different ways!  I’ve decided to use an old, unused watercolor sketchbook for my monthly planning pages.  This sketchbook provides plenty of extra room for art journaling and its pages are super thick.  I also see myself using the Planner’s elements in my ongoing smashbooking, 3×5 365, gluebooking, and in my art therapy work with clients.  Thank you Teresa for all these creative possibilities!

You can also check out more art journaling inspiration from Teresa at the The Art Journaler.

Making space for that [something] will reveal what is truly vital for you. ~@stargardner

I also finished my 2014 revo’lution art journal this week-end (hooray!), which I’ll be sharing here soon. It’s a really nice feeling to start the new year grounded in intention and to have this direction guided and supported by my creative practice.

Intention… is where we begin…

The time I’ve had off has really been like a little mini creative sabbatical!  I’m grateful I’ve had more time to do art, check out art, prepare projects, and get ready for the abundance that this year holds in opportunity, connection, and creativity.

[Today is Day One]… Beginning New & Inspired By…

I’m excited to share a look at my next few months ahead: art therapy happenings & creative stuff I’m up to in twenty14. I hope we’ll meet up or connect at some of these events or offerings!

New Year, New 365! Woo hoo!

I’m upsizing from last year’s 1 x 2.5 inch card to an index card and beginning a 3×5 365 adventure today….

3x5 365 | creativity in motion

3×5 365

There’s lots o’ inspiration out there for index card art journaling to help and guide me in this new journey, including the amazing Tammy Garcia’s ICAD (Index Card a Day) Challenge and Daily Paper Prompts on her site Daisy Yellow.  Tammy’s an ICAD inspiration and pioneer to so many involved in this art journaling movement!  Thank you Tammy!

To begin (creating a safe space!), I’ve purchased a simple expandable plastic file, a little similar to this to hold and organize the cards I’ll be making.  This kind of card containing system also makes it very easy for me to take the project on the go, an important consideration for how I like to work and for following through with this daily creative practice.

I’m looking forward to creating within a larger space, incorporating more writing (on the flipside), as well as experimenting with more materials, techniques, and prompts in my 2014 creative life!  Look for 3×5 365 art to be posted here weekly. Yay!

How are you launching or nurturing your creative daily practice in 2014?
