Reflections on 365 Making

December 31, 2016

Today marks the completion of another year of daily creative practice with my annual 365 project…. after being so curious what it would be like to take on this kind of challenge, I am so glad I embarked on one in 2013 on New Year’s Day…. Each year and creative undertaking since has graced me with something new to explore over the last 4 years… Towards the end of my first 365 project, I reflected on the discoveries and reminders it helped inspire.

I am re-visiting this list today to make some updates and to reflect more on honoring the lessons that continue to keep me committed to this important process:

Reflections on 365 Making | creativity in motion

1. I’m always amazed and astonished by the containment of small holding spaces in art making. Working within a small space has helped me make each 365 project manageable. Time and time again the power that this small space holds in its message, form, and process is awesome to witness.

2. Remember to slow down.  This reminder is only one of the important lessons that my 365 projects has gifted me. Taking time out to stop and pause for a moment to work on the day’s image is so important.  Sometimes it might feel like there’s no time or things are just so busy that taking this time seems impossible… but engaging in this process helps bring a grounding, focus, and presence that I have come to value and appreciate every day.

3.  Appreciate each day. Each creative piece and image is an expression of gratitude for another day.   It also allows me the opportunity to be thankful for the moment, which is important to recognize and not take for granted.

4. Trust the process. There are definitely some days that I have struggled to find time or don’t feel as connected to the image I have created in comparison to others, but at the end of the day it all works out.  The process of creating everyday outweighs the emphasis on the product. Just like art therapy!

5. I really do have 20-30 minutes everyday to create. Probably one of the biggest surprises after 4 years of consecutive creating!  It’s still true!  Some days it may have been 10 minutes, sometimes longer than a half an hour, but there was always time within each of the 1460 days.

6. Community: It has been inspiring to connect to and support others working on their 365 projects or daily creative practice through social media… 🙂

2016 also brought a couple of opportunities to share my 365 projects, which I enjoyed contributing to:

I thank everyone for their support and encouragement with this process over the last four years! It has definitely helped– ❤  I am looking forward to launching another 365 project for the new year ahead. I can’t wait to share it with you!

Happy creating in 2017- What are some of your creative goals to focus on in the next 12 months?

Illuminate 365 Awakening & Renewal Photo Roundup

June 3, 2016

Behold some of the daily photos I’ve taken and re-worked for Illuminate 365 over the last couple of months!

It is inspiring to see them together here. With springtime gradually awakening during this time I have enjoyed capturing and symbolizing aspects of the season to reflect on the illumination theme.  A time for re-growth, renewal, as well as gratitude for days that awaken with and contain so much more light, even on the darkest days.

My Daily Treasure Hunt for Illumination: Illuminate 365

April 5, 2016

It is now month four of my 2016 project: Illuminate 365.  Uploading all the photos and captures I’ve taken everyday over this first quarter was a wonderful (yet, a little overwhelming!) opportunity to reflect on the images, concepts, and messages they each convey.  This creative adventure has become a daily treasure hunt for illumination- revealed through rays of light, shadows of darkness, nature’s beauty, the morning sun, ordinary objects, warm candlelight, and many, many different places both outdoors and inside throughout this year’s winter season and now the fickle springtime that is upon us….

Many days honor inspiration such as, but not limited to: hope, grace, passion, courage, and creation…. other days provide a reminder or awakening of guidance, validation, and encouragement…. or a time embrace slowing down… while other days help me recognize that you cannot appreciate the light without the presence of darkness… each of the images below are all are sacred pieces and moments of this journey so far… (in no particular order):

I’ve taken all these photos on my iPhone- experimenting a lot with app filters (LiveCollage, iLeaker, Instagram, LightEffects) which is quite fun.  Another treasure hunt that accompanies this project for me is discovering quotes and inspirations that connect with the image.

As the spring starts to completely bloom and begins to give way to summer, it will be nice to take notice of a refreshed landscape with a greener scenery outside and the impact of longer, warmer days ahead. 🙂

Creative Deed 365: August Offerings

September 4, 2015

Wow- Month 8 of Creative Deed 365 has come and went- it flew by!

So here are some of my favorites from this month:

Creative Deed 365: August Offerings

And I was excited to discover that one of August’s creative deeds that I left at a local gas station was found. It’s always nice to know that a creative deed that was left behind found a home!  🙂

Creative Deed 365: August Offerings

This month I also created my first Flipagram to review August’s offerings, which was lots of fun to play with and make…

It’s hard to believe there’s just 4 months left of this project!

Hello September….  🙂

Creative Deed 365: July Offerings

July 31, 2015

July was a busy month for Creative Deed 365!  🙂

Earlier this month, Creative Deed 365 Minneapolis took place during this year’s AATA Conference in Minneapolis, which was a delight to follow via participants who shared this activity on social media.  There were some inspiring discoveries left and found during these 5 days!  Thank you to everyone who participated, both deeders and finders- so much fun!

Creative Deed 365: July Offerings | creativity in motionCreative Deed 365: July Offerings | creativity in motionI also discovered another local find on Instagram this month of a creative deed I left last week:

Below are all of July’s offerings that I made and distributed throughout the month…. I am still making progress with my Creative Deed 365 mailing list, where I am sending out creative deeds through the postal system too- some of July’s offerings went out today!

Instagram continues to be a popular place to share: over 700 creative deed related photos have been posted so far-!  Check them all out here with the #creativedeed365 hashtag.

Wow….definitely past the half way point now— August creative deeding awaits!

Creative Deed 365: June Offerings

June 30, 2015

Wow- Here’s month 6 (!!) of this year’s 365 project!

Creative Deed 365: June Offerings | creativity in motion

I’ve kept playing around with textured backgrounds using gel pens, acrylic paint, & stamp ink for a big chunk of this month’s creative deeds….. Fun! I also decided to stay with the half sized index card format for the majority of June’s offerings.

I’ve also been making a creative stockpile from this month’s creative deeds for next week’s Creative Deed 365 Minneapolis where I’ll be leaving them out and about on my way to and during this year’s national art therapy conference.

Creative Deed 365 Artful Beginnings: Creating It Forward in 2015

Creative Deed 365 Minneapolis

May 9, 2015

Coming this summer…. Creative Deed 365 Minneapolis!

Creative Deed 365 Minneapolis | creativity in motion

This summer, the national art therapy conference will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota July 8-12.  I’ll be attending and also presenting, as well as keeping up with my creative daily practice of leaving creative deeds for others to find while away.  I thought it would be fun to see if other art therapists and art therapy students also planning to attend this year’s conference would be interested in leaving their own creative deeds and creative goodness throughout the event during these five days.  Wanna join in?

If you’re going to the conference this year, it’s easy to participate either as a Creative Deeder or Creative Deed Finder:

  • Creative Deeder: If you are interested in making and leaving Creative Deed Art, just make one for everyday of the conference and leave one each day in a random place onsite at the conference for another attendee or hotel visitor to discover. Creative Deed Art includes inspiring and encouraging handmade pieces of creative expression, infused with messages of kindness, hope, and positivity left behind for unsuspecting others.  Throughout this year in the Creative Deed Facebook Group, members often create artist trading card or index card size art, but there’s really no particular form or size.  I’ve been making my daily pieces of art with half size index cards, playing cards, and handmade paper cut to 3 x 2.5 inches to keep my practice manageable, both in the making and releasing. I also include a simple label on the back of each card that explains the intention of the project and what was just found.
  • Creative Deed Finder:  If you find a creative deed while in attendance at the conference, use social media to let everyone participating in the project about your creative find using the hashtags #found #creativedeed365 #minneapolis.  Let’s keep the energy going virtually!

I hope you’ll make plans to join in on this creative fun this summer- as a Creative Deeder, Finder, or maybe both!  Imagine the creative goodness and energy that could be made, shared, and received during this week! 🙂

Creative Deed 365: April Offerings

It’s day 120 of creative deeding for this year’s 365 project!

This month I started to use playing cards, as well as handmade paper for the foundation of my daily cards in combination with acrylic & puffy (fabric) paint, distressed ink, magazine photo collage, gel pens, and more. Drop off locations have included post offices, galleries, community bulletin boards, park benches, restrooms, and the usual favorite places of coffee shops, local stores, and wherever I’m inspired to leave one behind on my daily path.

There’s also been lots of activity in the Creative Deed 365 Group on FB, where it’s always awesome to see what other artists are doing everyday with their creative deed making through their thoughtful messages & images.

Check out this time lapse video that Debi shared this month featuring her creative deed making in action:

3×5 365 2014 Creative Goodness

December 31, 2014

3x5 365 | creativity in motion

3×5 day 365 is here!  Yay! To help celebrate the completion of this year’s creative daily practice, I put together a short video with all the index card art I created over the last 12 months:

I feel a deep amount of gratitude and appreciation to everyone who has helped support my 3×5 creating efforts…. Thank you!  This has been in the form of generous encouragement, interest, & feedback via social media, this blog, and 6 Degrees of Creativity Paper Stash Swappers who helped provide some of the collage material I’ve used.  And a big thank you to Tammy of Daisy Yellow, who has been such a huge inspiration in all things index card art related!  One of the highlights of this year’s project was finally being able to participate in Daisy Yellow’s ICAD this summer.

This has been a fun, creative adventure!  As I review the video and each of the days, weeks, and months from this project, it’s awesome to see the year come together and end in this way.

Looking forward to new creative adventures in 2015!

Creative Chain Reaction

November 1, 2014

Month #10 just came to a close for my 3×5 365 project and in reflection I’ve decided to put together some of the words & phrases from days 274-304 in a poem of sorts:

Creative Chain Reaction | creativity in motion

Creative Chain Reaction

Welcome….stillness….

An artful perception

Of enoughness re-framed

Before & between

To challenge my adventure into imagination

A new day…. Always.

Believe! Work creatively!

Permission granted to do the things you love to do.

To honor the stories behind these stories

With mindful power and an abundance of hope

To reclaim with mercy & inspiration.

The next thing, a newness, re-birth….

Re-forming and finding grace

For a creative reveal, full of growth.

This is it:

A creative opening to fall into this rhythm.
