Creative Motivation: The Gifts of Online Community Participation

Creative Motivation: The Gifts of Online Community Participation | creativity in motion

As part of this year’s Spectrum (on its opening day May 2!), I am really excited and looking forward to chatting with Spectrum Organizer Hali Karla about the topic Creative Motivation: The Gifts of Online Community Participation. In our recorded video chat we’ll be exploring how to find your own rhythm and balance when using social media connections for inspiring & motivating your creativity.  As you may know, it is a topic I am super passionate about! I can’t wait to talk with Hali about it and have it included to kick off Spectrum 2016 as a bonus offering for this year’s participants- Yay!

How have you used social media connection to nurture or inspire your creativity?

Artful Hands & Hearts: Honoring Community

March 1, 2014

This past week it was great fun and an honor to be the featured guest for 21 SECRETS LIVE!, hosted by the wonderful Hali Karla.  As introduced here before, this awesome event happening every Wednesday through June, celebrates five years of Dirty Footprints Studio’s 21 SECRETS art journaling- Yay!. Past workshop instructors have been invited to participate in a real time art journaling session with a live online chat audience.

Chatting it up with wonderful host Hali Karla!

Each week the featured guest introduces a theme for that evening’s broadcast to focus on.  Themes so far have been a combination of inspiring techniques and prompts to enrich our art journaling experience while hanging out with amazing artists such as Jane Davenport, Aimee Myers Dolich, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, and Rachel Whetzel- and more awesomeness coming up!

The theme I chose for my broadcast was dedicated to the intention of community to honor what we receive from and offer to one another when in a group that we feel authentically connected to and a sense of true belonging.

I offered the idea of using our hands to symbolize this outreach within our art journals: one hand to express what we receive from being part of a community and the other hand symbolizing what we offer in our giving.

Let the [LIVE!] Art Journaling Begin!

While all working in our art journals together, we chatted about the benefits and value of community in relationship to art-making and creative practice. Helping decrease isolation, increase support, foster accountability, inspire growth, and cultivate connection among individuals with a common passion or interest were some of the topics discussed while we artfully concentrated on the theme.

Here are a few pages from that evening’s broadcast:

Reflections about community as a positive, hopeful, and safe place to give & receive together were explored, as well as the different creative forms community can take, especially online.

My Art Journal Spread- Together

My art journaling during the broadcast included using acrylic paint, collage elements in the form of maps and dictionary words, oil pastels, and some distressed ink, stain, and paint.  As I worked, the image started to become a guide of sorts of what I have re-discovered and learned about the meaning of community in my work, relationships, and art-making.

Many, many thanks to Connie for inviting me to be part of 21 SECRETS LIVE!, Hali for hosting, and the community of participants who attended the broadcast or checked out the post-show recording, and artists who allowed me to share their art here.

It was a very cool experience (and very fitting!) to explore the theme of community in this way!

Registration for 21 SECRETS LIVE! is now closed, but all the broadcast recordings will be available as a self-study bundle this summer. Yes! A new 21 SECRETS online art journaling workshop opens April 1 if you are interested in checking out this inspiring creative community!

2014 Art Journaling Creative Goodness: 21 SECRETS LIVE!

December 21, 2013

As December begins to wind down and 2014 approaches, one of the awesome art journaling happenings I am really looking forward to and super excited, honored to be involved with is 21 SECRETS LIVE!  I announced this a few months ago and was even able to give away a couple of free spots on this blog last month, but along with 2014, 21 SECRETS LIVE! is almost here now!  Yay!

Here’s a re-cap of the creative goodness we’ll be up to during the upcoming year: Beginning January 15 (through June!) co-hosts Connie Hozvicka, Lisa Wilson, and Hali Karla along with a past 21 SECRETS teacher will be meeting every Wednesday at 6pm EST for a LIVE! video broadcast where you’ll be able to art journal along in real time, ask us questions through a chat format, and feel like we’re right there with you in your studio LIVE!

My LIVE! broadcast hosted by Hali, is scheduled for February and I can’t wait to hang out with you to chat about & do some art journaling together through Spreecast.

Also joining in on the fun are these past (and amazing!) 21 SECRETS Instructors: Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, Dion Dior, Jane Davenport, Andrea Schroeder, Aimee Myers Dolich, Alma Stoller, Carissa Paige, Dale Anne Potter, Violette Clark, Roben-Marie Smith, Rachel Whetzel, Natasha Reilly, Rae Missigman, Diana Trout, Rachel Awes, Traci Bunkers, Kate Crane, Tracy Verdugo, and Kelly Barton.

I recently got to view a Spreecast art journaling session in action with Connie, Lisa, and Hali and it looked like so much fun!  I’m looking forward to some pre-21 SECRETS LIVE! spreecasting fun with the inspiring Hali as we get ready for my broadcast on February 26.

21 SECRETS LIVE!

Spreecast is a social video platform that connects people together through live broadcasting, photo sharing, and online chatting. According to the Spreecast’s mission, they “believe people obtain a deeper understanding of each other and a more emotional connection when they interact face-to-face.” The site is also a great way to meet others who share your interests (like art journaling!) and discover new ones!

Can’t make the LIVE! broadcasts? No worries– Each 21 SECRETS LIVE! broadcast is recorded and available for members to save, keep, watch on your own schedule, and time!  Members of 21 SECRETS LIVE! will also have access to a private Facebook group and Flickr gallery–for sharing your work, giving/receiving feedback, and staying connected to the inspiring 21 SECRETS LIVE! community!

There’s still time to join us (here)!  I hope you will!  What a nice way to start off 2014 and keep dedicating weekly time, energy, and inspiration to your art journaling practice!
