Illuminate 365 Awakening & Renewal Photo Roundup

June 3, 2016

Behold some of the daily photos I’ve taken and re-worked for Illuminate 365 over the last couple of months!

It is inspiring to see them together here. With springtime gradually awakening during this time I have enjoyed capturing and symbolizing aspects of the season to reflect on the illumination theme.  A time for re-growth, renewal, as well as gratitude for days that awaken with and contain so much more light, even on the darkest days.

My Daily Treasure Hunt for Illumination: Illuminate 365

April 5, 2016

It is now month four of my 2016 project: Illuminate 365.  Uploading all the photos and captures I’ve taken everyday over this first quarter was a wonderful (yet, a little overwhelming!) opportunity to reflect on the images, concepts, and messages they each convey.  This creative adventure has become a daily treasure hunt for illumination- revealed through rays of light, shadows of darkness, nature’s beauty, the morning sun, ordinary objects, warm candlelight, and many, many different places both outdoors and inside throughout this year’s winter season and now the fickle springtime that is upon us….

Many days honor inspiration such as, but not limited to: hope, grace, passion, courage, and creation…. other days provide a reminder or awakening of guidance, validation, and encouragement…. or a time embrace slowing down… while other days help me recognize that you cannot appreciate the light without the presence of darkness… each of the images below are all are sacred pieces and moments of this journey so far… (in no particular order):

I’ve taken all these photos on my iPhone- experimenting a lot with app filters (LiveCollage, iLeaker, Instagram, LightEffects) which is quite fun.  Another treasure hunt that accompanies this project for me is discovering quotes and inspirations that connect with the image.

As the spring starts to completely bloom and begins to give way to summer, it will be nice to take notice of a refreshed landscape with a greener scenery outside and the impact of longer, warmer days ahead. 🙂

Bring On Illuminating 2016!

January 1, 2016

‘Most new discoveries are suddenly-seen things that were always there. A new idea is a light that illuminates presences which simply had no form before the light fell on them.’Susan Langer

On this first day of the New Year, I am excited to share the new 365 project I’m about to embark on: Illuminate 365.

Illuminate 2016 | creativity in motion

My intention with this new daily creative practice is to capture images throughout the year that reflect variations on Illumination.   In 2012 and 2013 I started regularly taking photos of light with a project I called Through a Grateful Lens.  The last few months, I’ve been thinking about how much I’ve missed this practice and the special connection to gratefulness, hope, and comfort these light captures helped inspire during this time. I am curious to discover what a whole year’s worth of captures each day sparked by the expanded concept of light, insight, and understanding will reveal or offer.  Bring on Illuminating 2016!

My plan is to use digital art making through fun apps and programs to get creative with the images that I take in the spirit of this project and share them in quarterly round ups here on this blog. Daily captures will be shared on Instagram.

How would you like to illuminate 2016?

Here’s to a Happy New Year to us all full of art and creative goodness!

Through a Grateful Lens: Ascending Autumn Light Together

November 22, 2013

As fall transitions into winter here, I wanted to make sure I took the time to reflect on my captured autumn light throughout the last few months.  The fall season and months seemed to go by very quickly on my end and with this, it’s even more important for me to mindfully pause and extend my thankfulness for the light’s nourishment (which presented itself in so many forms, btw).

Light continues to become visible to me not only in the sky that surrounds us all, but seen brightly in others….though sincere intentions,  supportive relationships, and beautiful creative energy brought into our sacred shared space….

Through a Grateful Lens: Fall 2013 | creativity in motion

Several of these photos were taken while I was traveling this month in moments of still reflection and simple appreciation.

The moments and meetings of new or renewed connection I enjoyed with students, colleagues, friends, significant others, and creative souls inspired within me a deep sense of gratitude & hope that continues to ascend love & light.

As I continue on my path following the light, it is comforting to remember there are others on this shared journey…. following the light and the forms it takes to nurture a common, higher good…. together.

Behold (!) the collection of my most favorite filtered light captures I’ve taken throughout this summer on my iPhone and then posted on Instagram. Over the last 14 months, it’s been fun, rewarding, and grounding to keep up this practice of “following the light” as a simple, visual reflection of being in (and honoring) the present moment, as well as a creative expression to pay gratitude to the love & light energy that shines all around.

This week I stumbled upon this lovely news article about the photography of Charles Blackhall and his view of photography as a form of mediation to “open the good eye”.  Blackhall uses photography as a process to “regain fresh eyes”, slow down the moment, practice here and now focusing, attunement, and more:

“This practice, in my opinion, is really mindfulness meditation with visual perceptions as the object of attention rather than watching one’s breath.”

— Charles Blackhall

Love!

It’s also comforting when I take these photos and so very often during this practice I think of other “light followers” who also post their amazing captures with such warm & inspiring intentions.  I sometimes reflect on how we are all under the same giant sky no matter who & where we are. For me, this awareness creates a refreshing simplicity and a humbling perspective.

“The light within me bows to the light within you.”

As the summer light begins to slowly fade, it’s a little hard for me to adjust to shorter and shorter days. This transition helps create an appreciation for the remaining moments of evening light…

Springtime is slowly (sloooowly) arriving on this end… which makes the light’s radiance during this time of renewal even more sacred and precious to honor with gratitude.

Through a Grateful Winter Lens: A Sense of Sacredness Among the Ordinary

January 26, 2013

I have tried to continue my practice of “following the light” through using my iPhone to take pictures of light and then sharing them on my Instagram feed.  Last fall I shared my first collection in this series that documented light photos taken since June 2012 as a mindful reflection for gratitude, good energy, hope, inspiration, love, and connectedness.

Through a Grateful Lens: Winter

Wintertime has inspired new reflections and inspirations for me to pause and be thankful for; during this season of shorter days, slowing down, and hibernation.  I have found that my practice of photographing the light during this time of year has helped me pay attention to the beauty and stillness of winter and be much more appreciative of this present moment.  I’m grateful for times of sunlight coming through the studio windows at work, the shining beam of light through the cloudy and cold sky when I’m out and about, or a January day full of blue skies and pure radiance.

Through a Grateful Lens: Winter

For me, this practice of photographing the light has fostered a process of discovering a sense of quiet beauty and simple sacredness among the ordinary days of winter that I have not experienced (aka noticed) before.

This reflection also reminded me to re-visit local author, photographer, and poet Don Iannone‘s book Winter Spirit: Using Winter’s Power and Beauty to Inspire and Heal. Don has always had this perspective! I am a big fan of Don’s poetry and photographs (in general and in any season!), but I especially appreciate his warm spirit and insight about winter as a source of wonder, love, and inspiration. It seems like a very fitting opportunity for me to re-look at the book’s prompts, themes, and quotes- Thank you Don!

I hope my new journey inspired by winter continues to grow….

Twentythirteen Revo’lution Cards of Intention

December 14, 2012

Throughout this month I have continued working on my 2013 revo’lution.  This has become an annual practice for me called ready for revo’lution where I identify intentions that I want to manifest and cultivate throughout the upcoming new year and then create an image that represents it that I can keep handy as a visual reminder.

During the previous four years I have created an altered book using a children’s board book and mixed media to feature 8 intentions.  For this 5th year, I was really drawn to simplifying my practice and only identifying 6 intentions in the size of artist trading cards.  I think this was inspired by and and has become an extension of the powerful experience I had this year with creating my Blessing Cards for Hannah Klaus Hunter‘s 6 Degrees of Creativity 2 e-workshop Still Place in a Changing World: Mindful Studio Practice.

2013 Revolution Intention Cards

My 2013 core revo’lution Intention Cards

This year’s revo’lution includes the core intentions Light, Stillness, Trust, Service, Stillness, and Honor.

I’ve also been studying up on Dr. Wayne Dyer’s perspective on intention as “not as something you do—but as an energy you’re a part of.”  The 6 intentions I have named above are energies I want to be connected to, help create, and be mindfully aware of in this new approaching year.

You can learn more about Dr. Dyer’s work and research about the Power of Intention in this lecture:

Soooo….I wonder what would manifest if we developed an intentional revo’lution practice every day in 2013 through art-making? What would your 2013 revo’lution look like?

Through a Grateful Lens: Following the Light

October 29, 2012

We have all the light we need, we just need to put it in practice.  ~Albert Pike

Since June, I have been taking photos of light with my iPhone and often posting them to Instagram.  Over the last five months this practice of “following the light” has become a mindful reflection for gratitude, good energy, hope, inspiration, love, and connectedness.

June sunshine beaming gratitude

As I put the collection together for this post, the moments in each of the photographs are very memorable.  I remember fondly the details about where I was, who I was with or what happened during the unfolding, beginning, or ending of that specific day and moment of the photo.

July’s glowing sun shines down

Often my photos of followed light were taken of the sun, sometimes the moon, or perhaps light reflected through a window or on a mirror.

Breathing in this August sunset

Through this process, the significance of light became a means to shine the way, be in the moment of what’s true and pure, as well as experience & share loving kindness and thankfulness for life’s abundance.

September sunset

The light in these photographs are inspired by not only nature or the surrounding environment, but also an inner connection of strength to manage those times when the light has trouble shining through or darkness begins to ascend. Being in the presence of light represents resiliency for me.  These photos also remind me that some amount of light is always present somewhere: to find, to become, to grow, to shine, find comfort in, and be grateful for.

Light before the storm: October

The entire collection below includes 24 photographs I’ve taken in a variety of places: at home, work, on the go locally, or travels I’ve made this summer and fall to Michigan, Missouri, Illinois, North Carolina, Nevada, Kansas, and Florida.
